Sunset at the Bryce Canyon National Park

This was one stop on our mid-west trip during Christmas break 2016. This was the biggest group trip I organized to date. There were 9 of us. We drove from Zion National Park to view the sunset. We arrived at the park late in the afternoon. After a short visit to the visitor’s center. We stopped by a few overlooks, and then began hiking at Sunset Point. The sunshine was just right, for which I was super grateful. The Bryce Amphitheater was covered with snow, which stood in contrast with the bright orange colors of the sand stones. It was an amazing hike down into the Amphitheater, surrounded by the hoodoos of various shapes. The most notable one is probably Thor’s Hammer. The sky showed this beautiful pink red and pink blue right after sunset, which added to the surreal scenery. Close to dawn, we gradually lost sight and had to turn back.

First Fiery Gizzard Trail Through Hike

Fiery Gizzard Trail is the place that re-ignited my love for hiking. I didn’t hike much during graduate school and found this gem when looking for a group outing not long after graduation. We went there in a group of 6 and were “tortured” by the big boulders and sometimes misleading trail blazers. We turned back at the Raven’s Point and took the easy way back via the Dog Hole Trail. That was my first tough hike in years and I rejoiced throughout the hike, for both the feeling of sweat and the escape to nature. Because of how special this place is, I always wanted to go back and do a through-hike.

Land Between the Lakes

A great late Fall hike. The sunshine was just perfect. Lots of newly fallen leaves on the ground. I loved the crushing sound when stepping on the leaves. We also saw bisons and turkeys at the Elk & Bison Prairie. They were pretty chill ╰⋃╯

I mishear lyrics pretty frequently, which always amuse myself and folks around me. Then one day I thought, well, I might as well keep a log to amuse myself later and hopefully bring some laughter to more folks. Be aware! Bad jokes ahead!

The cup subalgebra has the absorbing amenability property

Consider an inclusion of diffuse von Neumann algebras A inside M. We say that the inclusion has the absorbing amenability property (AAP) if for any diffuse subalgebra B inside A and any amenable intermediate algebra D between B and M, we have that D is contained in A. We prove that the cup subalgebra associated to any subfactor planar algebra has the AAP.

Maximal amenability and disjointness for the radial masa

We prove that the radial masa C in the free group factor is disjoint from other maximal amenable subalgebras in the following sense: any distinct maximal amenable subalgebra cannot have diffuse intersection with C.

Maximal amenability of the generator subalgebra in q-Gaussian von Neumann algebras

We develop a structural theorem for the q-Gaussian algebras, namely, we construct a Riesz basis for the q-Fock space in the spirit of Radulescu. As an application, we show that the generator subalgebra is maximal amenable inside the q-Gaussian von Neumann algebra for any real number q with absolute value less than 1/9.
